How to use the refresh button in Experience Designer?

Hello all,

I've been using Experience Designer for the last year or so and overall think it's a pretty solid application. One issue I keep running into though is the lack of an easy refresh option. There is a standard button for it on many of the widgets, but I don't see how you go about coaxing it into actually performing that task. In my most recent use case, I'm trying to refresh a transaction from the CMS100MI API. Does anyone have any leads on how to do this?
